Shipping your Grin Toothbrush – Sustainability vs. Speed

Posted by Simon Cooper on

In starting Grin, the goal was to make the world’s most environmentally friendly toothbrush. One big challenge? Shipping.

TL;DR – Grin can take a long time to arrive and we apologize for this. Your Grin ships to you by standard letter mail, which is slower but way better for the planet than express shipping. It also costs a lot less, so everyone wins.

Making the world’s most eco friendly toothbrush might sound a bit lofty, but it's not a stretch. (Want to learn more? Check out this blog post about recycling your Grin toothbrush and this one about how Grin compares to disposable plastic and bamboo toothbrushes.)

Sustainable Shipping

One of my concerns with Grin was shipping. How do we make a sustainable toothbrush and get it to you without using a ton of energy.

There are a few things to consider; packaging and the shipping itself. Let’s start with shipping since it's probably why you're here.

Shipping

By using letter mail (Canada Post), your order piggy backs with the postman, who is going every day anyway. So we’re not having a truck go out of the way to drop off your order.

Here’s a surprising fact:

MIT did a study in the US comparing shopping at a brick and mortar store to e-commerce. It's a bit dry, but the outcome is this: online shopping using non-express delivery is actually better for the planet than going to a store.

So while your Grin order might take a bit longer than the 2 – 4 days that Canada Post promises, the wait is hopefully worth it. We sure appreciate your patience!

Packaging

Grin is packaged in paper boxes that are recyclable. We don’t use any plastic and our packaging is super minimal. The next step will be biodegradable packaging for e-commerce.

For our shipping packaging, we are currently using recycled bubble mailers. They are made with at least 32.6% recycled content and fully recyclable. They even have 2 adhesive strips so they can be reused.

What's in Store for Our Packaging

We would like our toothbrush packaging to be as eco friendly as possible. We’re limited in what we can do because we rely on suppliers. But I'm encouraged as I see more sustainable solutions out there.

Thanks for reading and Grin on.
